Dr. Prischmann Awarded Ben Shuster Memorial Award for Blepharoplasty Research

Our board-certified facial plastic surgeon, Dr. Jess Prischmann, recently received the prestigious Ben Shuster Memorial Award. Presented once a year by the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, the award honors the resident or fellow in training who authors the most exceptional research paper with a focus on any clinical work or research in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery.

In order to earn this distinction, Dr. Prischmann worked as the senior author studying the frequency of and risk factors associated with dry eye symptoms (DES) and chemosis (swelling of the eyelids and surface of the eye) following blepharoplasty – a procedure commonly known as eyelid surgery. By analyzing nearly 900 cases of upper, lower, and combined blepharoplasty procedures she performed over a ten-year period, Dr. Prischmann was able to determine that certain preoperative factors and surgical approaches may lead to patients having an elevated risk of developing DES and chemosis. Her detailed examination may assist in the development of advanced surgical techniques that will help minimize patient risk in future procedures.
