Successful Upper Eyelid Surgery in Younger Patients

Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, is commonly performed to improve the appearance of aging eyelids. The procedure can effectively remove excess skin or fat around the eyelids, creating a more youthful appearance.

… But what if you already have a youthful appearance? What if you are young, but don’t like the appearance of your eyelids? The good news is that blepharoplasty can still be an effective procedure for you.

Younger patients often report hooding of the upper eyelids as something that they have always had, rather than something that has developed over time. This excessive upper eyelid skin can hang over the eyelids or eyelashes. Many patients feel that they have to hold their lids up or raise their eyebrows to get relief from a feeling of pressure or heaviness. Many women report they can’t wear eyeliner without smearing or smudging.

The goal of blepharoplasty in a younger patient is to improve the appearance of the upper eyelids without dramatically changing the overall look or shape of the eye. In other words, removing only what is necessary to maintain a natural appearance. Dr. Prischmann avoids removing fat around the upper eyelids in younger patients unless it is absolutely necessary.

This procedure takes about 45 minutes and is performed in a surgery center under sedation. While there is some swelling and bruising after surgery, most patients do not report pain as a side effect. Sutures are removed in seven days, and this is when most patients return to work. The scars take several weeks to fade, but should heal extremely well and fall in the natural eyelid crease.
