Facial Plastic Surgeon in Minneapolis on UV Ray Detox Treatments
Minneapolis, MN — According to Dr. Jess Prischmann, the Winter season can be an excellent time to address areas of skin that have been noticeably affected by Ultraviolet (UV) rays from the Summer sun. At her Minnesota practice, the Minneapolis facial plastic surgeon offers multiple treatments to help rid the face of sun damage, and she says many patients come into her office asking about procedures that will effectively “detox” their skin from the Summer’s UV rays. Although many different techniques are used to rejuvenate the face, she believes chemical peels and Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) can be particularly effective for UV skin detox.
Chemical peels can be great for ridding the face of sunspots and smaller wrinkles, says Dr. Prischmann. The procedure gently removes the thin surface layer of skin from the face allowing a smoother, less damaged sub-layer to rise and take its place. She says a specific chemical peel is selected for each individual depending on the extent of damage he or she wishes to address:
“Superficial Peels are often used to treat mild exfoliation and generally result in no downtime, whereas Medium-Depth Peels typically require three to five days of downtime and are good for UV detox, brown spots, and fine wrinkles. For issues such as advanced aging, deep wrinkles, and sun damage, a Deep Peel can be a great option and usually requires about a week to 10 days of downtime.”
In her experience, Dr. Prischmann also says the treatments have greatly reduced facial lines and blemishes caused by the sun’s rays, as well as aided in the improvement of overall skin tone.
Like chemical peels, IPL is also an effective procedure for combating UV rays. IPL therapy is designed to remove UV frequencies in the skin to prevent any further damage. Not to be confused with other laser treatments, the non-invasive procedure consists of light specifically calibrated to penetrate to the source of sun spots and wrinkles. Dr. Prischmann says the technique is not damaging to the skin and patients can expect to see results continuously improve in the weeks following the treatment. She adds that multiple treatments may be necessary for optimal results depending upon the severity of the targeted areas.
Although chemical peels and IPL therapy can help treat damage from UV rays, Dr. Prischmann says they are not cure-alls and patients should always wear sunscreen or protective clothing to avoid more severe repercussions later in life. She also says patients need to see a specialist when choosing where to go for facial plastic surgery in Minneapolis because not all brown spots should be treated with chemical peels or IPL, and surgeons need to look for other conditions such as melasma or melanoma.
